Leela’s Friend Notes

1. Who was Sidda? How was he treated in the house of the Sivasankers?

Ans: In the story “Leela’s Friend” by R.K. Narayan, Sidda was the servant in Mr. Sivasanker’s house.

In spite of being responsible, good-natured and a man of immaculate character, Sidda was badly treated by Mr. and Mrs. Sivasanker. Mrs. Sivasanker abused him without any reliable reason. Although he was innocent and good, he had to tolerate insult. Though he did not steal the chain, the inspector called him a devil. Mrs. Sivasanker also called him a thief. He was sacked from his job without any valid reason. In this way Sidda got injustice. The rich may do injustice to him, the law may treat him unjustly, but he would live forever being an embodiment of humanity in the minds of the grief-stricken readers.

Ans: Leela’s attachment (সংযুক্তি বা টান) for Sidda increased (বৃদ্ধি পেল) day by day because she got everything she desired (চাইত) from Sidda. Leela liked to play the teacher to Sidda and Sidda agreed to be her obedient (অনুগত) student. She insisted (জেদ করত) on his learning a few letters and Sidda underwent the drudgery (পরিশ্রম) of learning. When he felt such pressure (চাপ) unbearable (অসহ্য), he diverted (বিমুখ করত) her attention (মনযোগ). He would say to her that her mother was calling her. Leela failed to understand his trick (কৌশল). She was, however, very happy to be with Sidda. Even she was lulled to sleep (ঘুম পাড়ানো হতো) by the fantastic (চমৎকার) and surprising (বিস্ময়কর) stories of Sidda. Thus, she clung closer to Sidda day by day. She accompanied (সঙ্গ দিত) him when he was chopping wood or tending (পরিচর্যা করা) the garden. She was also with him when he was sent on errands. She was so happy with him that she always wanted his company for all her waking hours.

3. “Sidda was hanging about the gate. Mr. Sivasanker was uñable to up his mind.” And that decided it.” – What was Mr. Sivasanker doing then Why was Mr. Sivasanker unable to make up his mind? What decided the employment of Sidda? (2+2+1)

In the beautiful story “Leela’s Friend” by R.K. Narayan, Mr. Sivasanker, Leela’s father, was then standing on the front veranda of his house. He was thinking deeply about employing a servant who would look after Leela and do some other duties in their house.

Mr. Sivasanker subjected Sidda to scrutiny. He wanted to know about his previous experience of work. He answered but vaguely about his previous master’s address. Mr. Sivasanker was not fully satisfied with the answer. So, he was perhaps in a little bit of doubt. That is why he was unable to take a decision.

At the very first sight,  Leela liked Sidda. She told her father not to send Sidda away. She insisted on keeping him in their house. This insist of Leela decided it i.e. the employment of Sidda.

As Sidda was a complete stranger to Mr. and Mrs. Sivasanker, they were taking time to reach a final decision. Their little daughter Leela saw Sidda and recommended him in her own way. Then her parents accepted it. Thus, Leela’s recommendation was very important for taking the decision.
