VIDYASAGAR – 200 YEARSS:
Mother India has produced many talents. Vidyasagar was one of them. He was born in 1820 on 26th of September in the district of Midnapur at Birsingha village. He was a great reformer, philosopher, educator, philanthropist. Vidyasagar started his primary education in village Pathsala. Then he came to Kolkata on foot with his father at the age of nine. There he learnt Sanskrit and English well. He became the head pandit of Fort William College. Vidyasagar also became the Principal of Sanskrit College. He got the duty of School Inspector. He left his job in 1858. Vidyasagar was much concerned about the poor and helpless people of our Country. He taught against Koulinya System, Polygamy. He supported widow remarriage and arranged many. He worte many books and translated Bengali to Engish. He made simple Bengali Alphabet. Vidyasagar wrote ‘Barnaparichyay’, ‘Byakaran Koumodi’, ‘Kathamala’, ‘Upakromonika’, ‘Sitar Bonobas’, ‘Shakuntala’ ‘Bhrantibilas’ etc.
Though he came of an orthodox family, he was very liberal. He met with Ramakrishna and they had a very sweet relationship. Ramakrishna applauded him as “the ocean of wisdom”.
He worked for the development of Sabar Community in Karmater. He devoted himself for the spread of woman education. This great man breathed his last on 29th July in 1891 at the age of 70. People are celebrating his two hundred years birthday. We must leam boldness, generosity and benevolence from him.
