Devastating Super Cyclone “Yaas”

Digha, 26th May, 2021: West Bengal, Odisha recently saw another gravest super cyclonic storm in 2021. A severe depression was condensed in the Bay of Bengal. That depression turned into a severe super cyclone. It was named ‘Yaas’ by Oman. The meaning of the word ‘Yaas’ is Jasmine. As a precaution, about 15 lakh inhabitants of the coastal areas were evacuated to safe shelters to avoid casualties. Odisha Government also sent about 2 lakh people to safe places. The West Bengal administration was very prompt to send the people of coastal areas to the safe shelters. Cattles were also taken to safe places. Even NDRF teams were sent before the lashing of the cyclone by the Central Government to bring motion in the rescue operation.

Control rooms were opened in Nabanna and other places to control the overall situation. The Chief minister Mamata Banerjee herself kept an eye over the whole situation. The most affected districts of West Bengal were Uttar 24 pargana, South 24 pargana, Howrah, Hooghly, Purba Medinipur, Paschim Medinipur. Many trees and electric posts were uprooted due to the cyclone. Electric and telephone services were disrupted badly. It made its landfall in between Dhamra and Balasore in Odisha with a speed of 140 kilometres per hour at around 9:30 a.m. Due to cyclonic storm, the water level of Digha rose up to 5 metres high. All the shops and buildings beside the sea went under water. The mostly affected areas due to high water level were Purba Medinipur, Sagardeep, Gangasagar, Kakdeep, Haldia, Gosaba, Namkhana, Hingalganj. The rescue teams were are ready to bring the situation under control. Tajpur, Mandarmani, Ramnagar, Shankarpur, Old Digha, New Digha were also completely flooded. Marketplaces hotels were underwater. The rescue teams where trying their best to to move the affected people to the safe places. The media reporters were making news standing at chest level water. Due to heavy tidal wave, the vehicles, cars were floating on water. But the situation was so grave that even the officials of the administration were very much anxious. Most of the areas of Digha was flooded completely due to spring tide. Many people became helpless losing their houses. According to the chief minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee, around 1 crore paper had been badly affected by this disaster, around 3 lakh houses had been collapsed and about 134 river dam had been destroyed by the destructive cyclone Yaas. Chief minister of West Bengal has decided to pay a visit to the badly affected areas to calculate the damage. The Prime Minister Narendra Modi also visited the affected areas and declared a compensation of rupees 2 lacs to the relatives of the dead persons and rupees 50000 for the injured persons. The Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee also launched “Duare Tran” to give the the compensation to the victims.
