“Sir Mohan Lal looked at himself in the mirror.” – Where was the mirror? What was the condition of the mirror? What did Sir Mohan tell the mirror?

Ans: In the story “Karma” by Khushwant Singh, the mirror was in the first class waiting room at the railway station where Mohanlal was waiting for his train.

The red oxide at its back had come off at several places and long lines of translucent glass cut across its surface.

Sir Mohan smiled at the mirror with an air of pity and patronage. He told that the mirror was very much like everything else in this country, inefficient, dirty, indifferent. Sir Mohan actually mocked at the mirror which is an Indian product.

“His face lit up as he saw two English soldiers trudgng along.” – Whose face lit up and when? Why did the face of the person spoken to lit up?

Ans: In the story “Karma” by Khushwant Singh, the face of Sir Mohan Lal lit up when he saw two English soldiers trudging along the platform looking for room in the train.

sir Mohan Lal I was very eager to talk to English persons to show his talent how much he imbibed their culture. As the compartment was empty, he sat alone in despair. But when he looked out of the window down the crowded platform, he saw two English soldiers trudging along for room in the compartments. His heart warmed and his face lit up with joy.

“Reeled backwards, tripped on his bedding, and landed on the suitcase. Toodle-oo!” – Who reeled backwards and why what irony underlies the situation?

Ans: Sir Mohan Lal reeled backwards because he was thrown out of the running train by the two British soldiers.

Sir Mohan Lal had a very high opinion about the English people. But the behaviour of the two English soldiers reveals the underlying irony. The two British soldiers forcefully occupied is first class reserved berth. They called him a nigger. They threw him out of the running train. This is the irony underlying.

“Preposterous, preposterous,” he shouted – Who shouted and why? What was the result? (2019)

Ans: In the short story “Karma” by Khushwant Singh, Sir Mohan Lal shouted. He shouted because the two English soldiers who entered the train compartment began to misbehave with Sir Mohan. They called him a ‘niggr’ and threw away everything of him in the platform. Being humiliated by the two soldiers sir Mohan Lal shouted.

As Sir Mohan shouted with hoarse voice, the two English soldiers became very much angry. One of the soldiers struck him on the face and then they threw him out of the train.

“He was dismayed” – Who was ‘he’? When was he dismayed and why? What did he do then?

Ans: Sir Mohan Lal was dismayed in the short story “Karma” by Khushwant Singh.

When Sir Mohan entered the first class coupe of the train, he found the compartment empty and he was dismayed. He was dismayed as he wanted to have some British as his fellow-travellers in the train compartment.

As a result Sir Mohan sighed and sat down in a corner and opened the copy of ‘The Times’ which he had to read several times before.

Sketch the character of Lachmi or Mrs. Lady Lal.

The character of Lachmi gives a sharp contrast with that of sir Mohanlal. She is totally an Indian woman. She is middle-aged, short, fat and fair. She wears a dirty white saree with red border and traditional Indian jewels. She feels ill with so called upper class people. She is talkative. As she is an ordinary woman, the boundary of a aspiration is limited. She thanks god for the favour of feeling meal and is contented with getting a seat by the window. When Mohan Lal was driven out of the compartment by the British soldiers, Lady Lal spat and sent a jet of red dribble flying across like dart. It shows the victory of a simple Indian woman over a learned, arrogant and proudly Indian who pretends to be foreigner.
