The funny (মজার) part (ব্যাপারটা) used to be (হোত) that people always pitied (করুণা করত) us when the time came for us to return (ফিরে আসা). (অর্থাৎ, মজার ব্যাপার হলো যে, যখন আমাদের ফিরে আসার সময় হতো লোকেরা আমাদেরকে করুণা করত) They said we must be so (ভীষণ) lonesome (একাকী) over there (সেখানে অর্থাৎ দ্বীপে) with no other children near us.(লোকে বলতো যে সেখানে আর কোনো শিশু না থাকায় আমরা অবশ্যই সেখানে ভীষণ একাকী হয়ে পড়ব)

(Pirate cave – এর মতো খেলা দুজনের পক্ষে খেলা খুব কঠিন) But we used to quarrel (ঝগড়া করা) a good deal (প্রচুর) with the mainland children in winter. We thought (ভাবতাম) it would be so Jolly (খুশির) to have an uncle and aunt and some cousins. (আমরা ভাবতাম যদি আমাদের কাকা, কাকিমি, আর কিছু খুড়তুতো পিসতুতো ভাই বোন থাকতো তাহলে খুব খুশির ব্যাপার হতো)Once (একবার) we asked father about it but he looked so sorrowful (মনমরা) that we should we had not. (আমরা একবার বাবাকে এই ব্যাপারটি জিজ্ঞাসা করেছিলাম, কিন্তু তাকে এত মনমরা লাগল যে মনে হল না জিজ্ঞাসা করলেই ভালো হতো )। He said it was all his fault (ভুল) (বাবা বলেছিলেন যে এটা পুরোপুরি তার ভুল)। Claude and I did not understand what he meant. It is always lovely (সুন্দর) on the Big Half Moon in summer. One day there was a grand (দারুণ) wind (বাতাস) for kite flying (ওড়া). I am not sure (নিশ্চিত) how (কেমন করে) it happened(ঘটল), but as (যখন)I was bringing (আনছিলাম) the kite from the house, I tripped (তড়িঘড়ি করে ছুটছিলাম) and fell (পড়ে গেলাম) over the rocks. My elbow (কনুই) went clear through (সরাসরি ঢুকে গেল) the kite making a big hole (গর্ত).
We had to hurry (তাড়াহুড়ো করা) to fix (ঠিক করে নিতে) the kite if we wanted to send it up (এটাকে উপরে পাঠাতে বা ওড়াতে) before the wind fell (এখানে কমে যাওয়া). , We rushed (ছুটে গেলাম) in to the lighthouse to get some paper. We knew there was no more red paper. /We took (নিলাম) the first thing that came handy (হাতের কাছে) – an old letter lying (পড়ে ছিল) on the bookcase in the sitting room.
` We patched (তাপ্পি দিলাম) the kite up with the letter, a sheet on each side and dried (শুকিয়ে নিলাম) it by the fire. ‘ We started out (বেরিয়ে পড়লাম) and up went (চলে গেল) the kite like a bird. The wind was glorious (অনুকূল) and it soared (উঠে গেল). All at once (হঠাৎ) – snap (ছিঁড়ে যাওয়ার শব্দ)! And there was Claude standing with a bit (টুকরো) of cord (তার) in his hand, looking (দেখাচ্ছিল) foolish (বোকা). Our kite had sailed away (উড়ে চলে গেল) over to the mainland (মূল ভূখণ্ডে).
A month (মাস) later (পরে) a letter (চিঠি) came for father. After he finished (শেষ করা)reading it, his eyes looked (দেখাচ্ছিল) as if (যেন মনে হয়) he had been crying. ” Do you want to know what became of your kite?” he said. Then he sat down beside us and told us the whole (পুরো) story.
Father had (বাবার ছিল) a brother and sister. He had quarrelled (ঝগড়া করেছিল) with his brother and left (ত্যাগ করেছিল) home. Years afterward (কয়েক বছর পরে) he felt অনুভব করল) sorry (দু:খ) and when he went back (ফিরে গেল), he found (দেখল) his brother had died and he could not find (খুঁজে পেল না) his sister.
The letter father had just received (গ্রহণ করেছিল) was from his sister, Aunt Esther, mother of Dick and Mimi. She was a widow (বিধবা) who lived hundreds of miles inland. One day when Dick and Mimi were out (বেরিয়ে ছিল) in the woods (জঙ্গলে), they discovered (দেখতে পেল) the kite on the top (উপরে) of a tree and carried (নিয়ে গেল) it home. When their mother saw (দেখল) the kite patched (তাপ্পি মারা) with the letter, she turned pale (বিবর্ণ হয়ে গেল).
It was the very letter (সেই চিঠিটা) she had once (একবার) written to her brother. Filippa was her mother’s name and Claude was her father’s. She knew who we must be. So she sat down and wrote to Big Half Moon and father received (পেয়েছিল) the letter.
Next day, father went and brought (নিয়ে এল) aunt Esther and Dick and Mimi with him. They had been here ever since. Aunt Esther is a dear and Dick and Mimi are too jolly for words.
But the best of it all is that we have relations now!
