Kharagpur, 12.10,17: About 70 people were injured, out of them 15 were seriously injured , when yesterday four coaches of the Howrah-Secundrabad Falaknuma Superfast Express derailed near the outercontrol cabin of Kharagpur station. It was 4.00 p.m. and the train was running late by about an hour because certain parts of the track between Kolaghatand Panskura were under repair. Other-wise the superfast express would be running at a much greater speed and the accident might have led to the death of hundreds of passengers. Within a few minutes of the accident, railwaymen, the local people and passengers from the other coaches started rescuing the injured passengers from the derailed coaches.
Those who were seriously injured. So the local people immediately sent them to the Kharagpur Hospital. The track remained blocked for about three hours and a half. This train accident disrupted the train services in this section. The Divisional Superintendent of the South-Eastern Railways visited the spot and ordered an inquiry into the causes of the accident. They also ordered to submit the report within one week. The Railway Department also announced the financial help to the injured victims. The authority stressed that the guilty persons would get severe punishment.
