The Text:

When the family sits down to tea, the cat puts in an appearance to get his share. He purrs noisily and rubs himself against the legs of the family members. If there is a guest at the table the cat is particularly civil to him, because the guest is likely to have the best of what is offered. Sometimes, instead of giving him something to eat, the guest stoops down and strokes the cat, and says, “Poor pussy! Poor pussy!” The cat soon tires of that. He puts up his claw and quietly but firmly rakes the guest in the leg. “Ow!” says the guest, “The cat stuck his claws into me!” The delighted family remarks, “Isn’t it sweet of him? Isn’t he intelligent? He wants you to give him something to eat.”

The guest dares not do what he would like to do-kick the cat out of the window. So, with tears of rage and pain in his eyes, he affects to be very much amused, and sorts out a bit of fish from his plate and hands it down. The cat gingerly receives it, with a look in his eyes that says, “Another time, my friend, you won’t be so slow to understand.” He purrs as he retires to a safe distance from the guest’s boot before eating his food.

When (যখন) the family (পরিবারটি) sits down (বসে) to tea (চা পান করতে), the cat (বিড়ালটি) puts in (ধারণ করে) an appearance (একটি চেহারা) to get (পেতে) his share (অংশ বা ভাগ). He (সে অর্থাৎ বিড়ালটি) purrs (ঘর্ঘর আওয়াজ করে) noisily (জোরে জোরে) and rubs (ঘসে) himself (নিজেকে) against the legs (পায়ে) of the family members (পরিবারের সদস্যদের). If (যদি) there is a guest (কোনো অতিথি থাকে) at the table (টেবিলে) the cat (বিড়ালটি) is particularly (বিশেষ করে) civil (ভদ্র হয়) to him (তার প্রতি), because (কারণ) the guest (অতিথিটি) is likely to have (সম্ভবত পায়) the best (সবথেকে ভালো টা) of what (যেটা) is offered (দেওয়া হয়). Sometimes (মাঝেমধ্যে), instead of (পরিবর্তে) giving (দেওয়ার) him (তাকে) something (কিছু)
to eat (খেতে), the guest (অতিথি টি) stoops down (ঝুুঁকে পড়ে) and strokes (ধীরে আঘাত করে) the cat (বিড়ালটিকে), and says (বলে), “Poor (বেচারা) pussy (বিড়াল)! Poor pussy! The cat (বিড়ালটি) soon (শীঘ্রই) tires (ক্লান্ত হয়ে পড়েে) of that (ওটাতে). He puts up (তুলে) his claw (নখ বা থাবা) and quietly (নিঃশব্দে) but (কিন্তু) firmly (দৃঢ়ভাবে) rakes (আঁঁচড় কেটে দেয়) the guest (অতিথিকে) in the leg (পায়ে). “Ow” says (বলল) the guest (অতিথি টি), “The cat (বিড়ালটি) stuck (ফুুুুটিয়ে দিয়েছে) his claws (তার নখ) into me (আমার পায়ে).” The delighted (আনন্দিত) family (পরিবার) remarks (মন্তব্য করে), “Isn’t it sweet of him? (ও কি সুন্দর, তাই নয় কি?) Isn’t he intelligent? (ও কি বুদ্ধিমান, তাই না?) He (সে) wants (চায়) you (তোমাকে) to give (দাও) him (তাকে) something (কিছু) to eat (খেতে).

অনুচ্ছেদটির বাংলা মানে:

যখন তার পরিবারের সকলের চা পান করার জন্য একসাথে বসে, তখন বিড়ালটি একটি চেহারা ধারণ করে তার ভাগ বা অংশ নেওয়ার জন্য। সে জোরে জোরে গরগর করে আওয়াজ করে এবং পরিবারের সদস্যদের পায়ে নিজের গা ঘষে। যদি টেবিলে কোন অতিথি উপস্থিত থাকেন, তবে বিড়ালটি বিশেষকরে তার প্রতি ভদ্রভাবেই আচরণ করে, কারণ অতিথিকে সবার থেকে ভালো খাবারই দেওয়া হয়। মাঝেমধ্যে তাকে কিছু খেতে দেবার পরিবর্তে, অতিথি ঝুঁকে গিয়ে তার গায়ে হালকা চাপড় দিয়ে বলেন,” বেচারা পুষি! বেচারা পুষি!” বিড়ালটি শীঘ্রই ক্লান্ত হয়ে পড়ে। সে তার থাবা দিয়ে ধীরে ধীরে কিন্তু শক্তভাবে অতিথির পা আঁচড়ে দেয়। ” উফ্!” অতিথি বলে,” বিড়ালটা আমার পায়ের থাবা বসিয়েছে।” পরিবারের আনন্দিত লোকেরা বলে ওঠে,” বিড়ালটি কি মিষ্টি, তাই না? ও ভীষণ বুদ্ধিমান, তাই না? ও চাইছে যে আপনি ওকে কিছু খাবার দিন।”

The guest (অতিথি টি) dares not (সাহস দেখায় না) do (করতে) what (যেটা) he would like to do (সে করতে চায়ছিল) -kick (লাথি মেরে) the cat (বিড়ালটিকে) out of the window (জানালার বাইরে বের করে দিতে).
So, with tears (অশ্রু নিয়ে) of rage (রাগে) and pain (যন্ত্রণায়) in his eyes (চোখে), he (সে) afects ভান করে) to be (হতে) very much (ভীষণ) amused (মুগ্ধ), and sorts out (বেছে নেয়) a bit (এক টুকরো) of fish (মাছ) from (থেকে) his plate (তার খাবার প্লেট) and hands it down (হাত বাড়িয়ে দেয়). The cat (বিড়ালটি) gingerly (সতর্কতার সঙ্গে) receives (গ্রহণ করে) it (এটি), with a look in his eyes (চোখে দৃষ্টি নিয়ে) that (যেটা) says (বলে), “Another time (অন্য বার), my friend (আমার বন্ধু), you won’t be (তুুমি হবে না) so (এত) slow (ধীর) to understand (বুঝতে).” He purrs (ঘর্ঘর করে) as (যখন) he (সে) retires (চলে যায়) to a safe (নিরাপদ) distance (দূরত্বে) from (থেকে) the guest’s (অতিথির) boot (বুট) before (আগে) eating (খাওয়ার) his food (তার খাবার).

অতিথি যেটা করতে চান সেটা করতে সাহস পেলেন না – তিনি চান একটি লাথি মেরে বিড়ালটিকে জানলা দিয়ে বাইরে বের করে দিতে। তাই ভীষণ রাগ আর যন্ত্রণাই চোখের জল নিয়ে এমন ভান করেন যেন তিনি খুব আনন্দিত হয়েছেন এবং তার খাবারের প্লেট থেকে এক টুকরো মাছ বেছে নিয়ে নিচে হাত বাড়িয়ে নামিয়ে দেন বিড়ালটিকে। বিড়ালটি খুব যত্ন সহকারে তুলে নিল এবং চোখের দৃষ্টিতে বলল, ” বন্ধু, পরেরবার তোমার আর এত দেরি হবে না বুঝতে।” খাওয়া শুরু করার আগে সে গরগর করে শব্দ করতে করতে অতিথির জুতোর নাগালের বাইরে এক নিরাপদ দূরত্বে সরে গিয়ে বিশ্রাম নেয়।

rakes – scratches  (আঁচড় কাটে)

gingerly – carefully, without making any noise. (সতর্কিত হয়ে, কোনো আওয়াজ না করে।)
