After dinner Leela ran to her bed. Sidda had to be ready with a story. He sat down on the floor near the bed and told incomparable stories: of animals in the jungle, of gods in heaven, of magicians who could conjure up golden castles and fill them with little princesses and their pets…

Word meaning:

After (পরে) dinner (রাতের খাবার) Leela (লীলা) ran (ছুটে গেল) to her (তার) bed (বিছানায়). অর্থাৎ রাতের খাবার খাওয়ার পর লীলা শুতে গেল।) Sidda (সিদ্দাকে) had to be ready (প্রস্তুত থাকতে হতো) with a story (গল্প নিয়ে). He (অর্থাৎ সিদ্দা) sat down (বসতো) on (উপরে) the floor (মেঝের) near (কাছে) the bed (বিছানার) and (এবং) told (বলত) incomparable (অতুলনীয়) stories (গল্প): of animals (পশুদের গল্প) in the jungle (জঙ্গলের), of gods (দেবতাদের গল্প) in heaven (স্বর্গের), of magicians (জাদুকরদের গল্প) who (যারা) could (পারত) conjure up (জাদুবলে তৈরী করতে) golden (সোনালী) castles  (দুর্গ) and (এবং) fill (ভরিয়ে দিতে) them (দুর্গগুলিকে) with little (ছোট) princesses (রাজকুমারী দিয়ে) and (এবং) their (তাদের) pets (পোষ্য দিয়ে)…

The Text:

Day by day she clung closer to him. She insisted upon having his company all her waking hours. She was at his side when he was working in the garden or chopping wood, and accompanied him when he was sent on errands.

Day by day (দিন দিন) she (লীলা) clung closer (ঘনিষ্ঠ হলো) to him (সিদ্দার). She (সে অর্থাৎ লীলা) insisted (জেদ করত) upon having (পেতে) his (তার) company (সঙ্গ) all her waking hours (তার জেগে থাকার সময়ে অর্থাৎ যতক্ষণ লীলা জেগে থাকত ততক্ষণ সে সিদ্দার সঙ্গ চাইত।) She (সে অর্থাৎ লীলা) was (ছিল) at his side (তার পাশে অর্থাৎ সিদ্দার পাশে) when (যখন) he was working (সে কাজ করত) in the garden (বাগানে) or (অথবা) chopping (কাটত) wood (কাঠ), and (এবং) accompanied (সঙ্গ দিত) him (তাকে অর্থাৎ সিদ্দাকে) when (যখন) he was sent (তাকে পাঠানো হতো) on errands (টুকিটাকি কাজে).

One evening he went out to buy sugar and Leela went with him. When they came home, Leela’s mother noticed that a gold chain Leela had been wearing was missing. “Where is your chain?” Leela looked into her shirt, searched and said, “T don’t know.” Her mother gave her a slap and said, “How many times
have I told you to take it off and put it in the box?”

One evening (এক দিন সন্ধ্যায়) he (সে অর্থাৎ সিদ্দা) went out (বাইরে গেল) to buy (কিনতে) sugar (চিনি) and Leela went (গেল) with him (তার সঙ্গে). When (যখন) they (তারা অর্থাৎ সিদ্দা ও লীলা) came home (বাড়ি এলো), Leela’s (লীলার) mother (মা) noticed (লক্ষ্য করল) that (যে) a gold chain (একটি সোনার চেন যেটা) Leela had been wearing (লীলা পরে ছিল) was missing (হারিয়ে গেছে). “Where is your chain?” (চেনটা কোথায়?)
