Child Labour
The practice of children doing manual work for earning livelihood is called child labour. It is a great social evil. Every year we observe 12th June as the day of protest against child labour. But this social curse still persists in our society. The children work as wage earners in small workshops, shops, hotels, road-side tea stalls, in factories and in other fields. They work in overcrowded, dark and badly ventilated buildings. They make or pack bottles, cigarettes, bidis, fire works etc. Working in restaurants and taking to shoeshine work are very common practices among the children. Often enough they donot get wages. They only get just enough food to keep body and soul together.
The parents of those children let them work as they cannot feed them. Poverty lies at the root of the social curse. Child labour presents a grim picture of the socio-economic condition of a large section of our population. In a large overgrowing family, where there is hardly a square (পর্যাপ্ত) meal a day, the young child forcefully goes to work. Working under hazardous (ঝুঁকিপূর্ণ) conditions they start living a life of perpetual unhappiness and frustration (হতাশা).
But perhaps they have no choice, as otherwise the entire family faces starvation. The issue, therefore, cannot be banned without any consideration for the lives at stake. We must first give basic human needs such as food, clothing, water, education and provision of gainful employment to everybody. Till that is achieved, children should be protected from outright exploitation by enforcing provisions of child labour laws. Until we can eradicate this curse, we cannot look forward to a bright future.
