Kazi Nazrul Islam is known as a rebel poet of Bengal. He was one of the greatest Bengali poets. He was born at Churulia in the district of Burdwan on 24 May 1899. His father was Kazi Faqeer (Fakir) Ahmed and his mother was Jahida Khatun. Nazrul Islam came of a very poor family. He had his early education at village madrasa. But reality was very hard. So, he could not continue his study after class X. But since his boyhood, he had a keen interest in singing and composing songs. He joined as a member of the troupe. After the death of his father, Nazrul joined the army as a soldier during the First World War. After a few years, he left the army and came to Kolkata. There he started writing poems. His famous poem, “Bidrohi” meaning rebel, made him “the Rebel Poet” overnight. His first writing was published from Karachi now Pakistan. He was a great patriot, poet, and a good singer and lyricist. Songs, composed by him, are known as “Nazrul Geeti”. He wrote many books of poems – full of revolutionary spirit and nationalistic outlook. He composed about four thousand songs. He had bagged many awards. He was connected with the journals Nava Yug Ganabani, etc. He published many famous poems like ‘Agnibina’, ‘Dhumketu’, ‘Bisher Banshi’, ‘Samyabadi’ ‘Dolon Champa’ etc. He wrote poems for the poor and the oppressed. Some of his writings were banned by the British rulers. Nazrul preached and practised Hindu-Muslim brotherhood. “Padmabhusan” was conferred on the poet. In his last life, he was suffering from mental paralysis. Unfortunately, he lost the power of speech in 1942. This great man breathed his last (or died) on 29 Aug 1976.
