Ans: Ben Price was an eminent detective who investigated and got Jimmy Valentine arrested in the Springfield job.

After the consecutive cases of safe-burglary, Ben Price investigated the scenes and guessed that it was the job of Jimmy Valentine who had resumed his old business. The style, manner and the clueless subtlety of the job indicated that none but Jimmy could do this.

Ben Price was already familiar to Jimmy’s habits and strategies. He came to know these while investigating the Springfield case. Jimmy had some typical style of burglary. His habit included long-jumps, quick-gateways, no confederates and a taste for good society. All these enabled him to get off scot free.

Ans: The prison warden is the speaker here in the story “Alias Jimmy Valentine”. The warden had advised Jimmy to stop safe cracking and lead a “straight life”.

Jimmy Valentine was a convict sentenced for four years to Jail for a safe cracking in Springfield.

The warden had advised Jimmy while handing him over the pardon signed by the Governor. Jimmy was called on to the front office by a guard to receive the pardon from the warden.

The warden had perhaps seen some good in Jimmy’s manners and thought that he was not a bad fellow at heart. The warden wanted to make a man of him and therefore had advised Jimmy to stop cracking safes and live a straight life.

Question: “There on the floor was still Ben Price’s collar button.”- Who was Ben Price? When and by whom was the button found? How did the button come there?

Ans: Ben Price was an eminent detective who had stromed into Jimmy’s room to arrest him.

As Jimmy had opened the door of his room, he found that the interior of his room was just as he had left it. There on the floor was lying the collar-button of the detective.

Jimmy Valentine had found the button on the floor.

The collar-button of the shirt band belonged tothe detective, Ben Price, who along with his men had stormed into Jimmy’s room, overpowered him to arrest. There nust have been a great scuffle in between and the collar-button of the detective was torn and fallen on the floor which still remained there as a token of the struggle.
