About the Poet:Toru Dutt (1856-1877) was an Indian poet and translator, often referred to as one of the earliest Indian writers to gain recognition in English literature. Born on March 4, 1856, in Bengal, India, she came from an affluent and well-educated Christian family. Despite her brief life, which ended at the age of 21 due to tuberculosis, Toru left a lasting impact on literature. She was fluent in several languages, including English, French and Sanskrit, and her works are remarkable for their emotional depth, lyrical beauty and cultural synthesis.
Toru Dutt composed “Our Casuarina Tree” during the final years of her life, likely around 1876, as a tribute to her childhood memories and her deceased siblings, Abju and Aru.
